When I started working on a piece for the Centennial of Grand Central Terminal, I walked around the Terminal for days, looking for inspiration. I was lucky to meet a conductor, Joe Wenham, willing to chat. He told me his father, grandmother, and great-grandfather had all been conductors, starting before 1913. I said his family itself could illustrate the history of the Terminal and he told me that his great-grandfather had begun a family tradition of retrieving items he had brought to the Lost and Found and that had not been reclaimed, even buying items valuable enough to be sold. He began on a whim, but then decided to create a personal museum of memories of his passengers. The family has kept this up for 100 years.

They did not usually keep the kinds of objects most often lost — umbrellas, gloves, hats, glasses – but kept things that happened to strike their fancy. Neither Joe nor his father has been as enthusiastic about collecting as the first two generations, but they didn’t stop.
So instead of creating a work for the Centennial, I persuaded Joe to share some of the family collection, and together we chose the objects presented here.

___

Objects that were lost are found again in Jane Greengold’s installation, which uses 100 years of memorabilia and talismanic items to evoke the experience of travelers to Grand Central over its long history. Greengold creates a fictional narrative, weaving together objects she imagines were never claimed at the Terminal’s epic Lost & Found.

For years, with the help of friends and family, I have impaled 80 to 100 pumpkins on the spikes of the iron fence on the corner of Kane and Strong in Cobble Hill for Halloween. Every pumpkin is unique. The impaled pumpkins are left for months, to age as nature commands, into gnarly remnants of themselves.

Every year, hundreds of costumed trick-or-treaters have come by to enjoy the spectacle. This year, I invite neighbors and all pumpkin artists to contribute pumpkins to the fence. There are 274 spikes so there is room for a lot of participation.

To join in:
buy (or grow) the right size and kind of pumpkin – 4 ¾” – 5” inches in diameter, taller than it is round, and soft enough to carve;
LEAVE THE TOP ON;
cut a 3/4” square hole in the middle of the bottom (for the spike);
carve a face;
remove the innards of the pumpkin through the facial features; and
bring the carved pumpkin to the corner of Kane and Strong between 3 pm and 7 pm on October 31, 2012.

We will impale it!
